Dr Congo Kivu is a washed coffee and comes from the banks of Lake Kivu and the Nyiragongo Volcano – an active stratovolcano in the Virunga mountain.  The altitude, climate and volcanic soil offer an ideal combination for obtaining a uniquely flavored coffee.  Virunga has several agronomists working with coffee producers at the foot of the Nyiragongo volcano.  Coffee travels to one of five Virunga washing stations localized in the Butembo area where where it is milled and then trucked to the port of Mombasa, a 2 to 4 day journey across two countries, Uganda and Kenya.  The Congo coffee industry was at one point much more prominent, but, due to civil war (1998-2003) and continued political instability, the industry had all but disappeared.  Cooperatives are starting to establish and grow to revitalize the industry and bring back a well-needed source of income to Congolese of North and South Kivu.
